There are 2 main types of electrodes that are found in most boilers: The Ignition Electrode (sometimes known as the Spark Electrode) and the Flame sensing Electrode. When there is a need to activate the boiler, the PCB relays commands to the Spark Electrode which then produces a spark to ignite the gases within the combustion chamber. The flame is then monitored by the Flame Sensing Electrode which checks that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present inside the burner. This feature is critical as it stop gas from being supplied if the flame goes out.
