Depending on the type of appliance in question, there are two different types of heat exchanger: The main heat exchanger and the plate heat exchanger. Almost all boilers have a primary heat exchanger which allows generated heat to be passed in to the water system. The secondary heat exchanger, however, is only present in combi boilers and allows heat transfers across two closed water systems.
