A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that stops unburnt gas from flooding the boiler when the pilot light is out. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame the valve receives a small current, instructing it to stay open. When there is no signal, the valve stays closed.
