Electrodes tend to come in two main types: The Ignition Electrode (sometimes known as the Spark Electrode) and the Flame sensing Electrode. A Spark Electrode utilises an electronically generated spark to ignite the fuel inside the burner and begin the combustion process. The flame is then monitored by the Flame Sensing Electrode which checks that a flame is present inside the burner. This feature is critical as it prevents gas from flooding the burner if the flame goes out.
