A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that prevents unburnt gas from building up within the appliance when the pilot light is out. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that governs the gas valve. When the pilot end senses heat a small current is sent to the valve, notifying it to remain open. When there is no signal, the valve remains closed.
