In most boilers, there are two types of Electrodes : The Flame Sensing Electrode and the Spark Electrode. The Spark Electrode uses an electronically generated spark to ignite the fuel inside the burner and begin the combustion process. The flame is then monitored by the Flame Sensing Electrode which makes sure that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present within the combustion chamber. This feature is critical as it stop gas from being supplied if the flame goes out.
