In most boilers, there are two types of Electrodes : The Flame Sensing Electrode and the Spark Electrode. The Spark Electrode produces an electronically generated spark to ignite the gases within the combustion chamber. The flame is then monitored by the Flame Sensing Electrode which makes sure that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present inside the burner. This feature is critical as it prevents gas from flooding the burner if the flame has been extinguished.
