In most boilers, there are two types of Electrodes : The Ignition Electrode (sometimes known as the Spark Electrode) and the Flame sensing Electrode. A Spark Electrode produces an electronically generated spark to ignite the fuel inside the burner and begin the combustion process. The flame is then monitored by the Flame Sensing Electrode which checks that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present inside the burner. This feature is critical as it stop gas from being supplied if the flame goes out.
