A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that restricts unburnt gas from building up within the boiler when there is no flame detected. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the other is attached to a volt sensor that governs the gas valve. When the pilot end senses heat a small current flows to the valve, notifying it to remain open. When no signal is sent, the valve stays closed.
