Electrodes tend to come in two main types: The Flame Sensing Electrode and the Spark Electrode. The Spark Electrode utilises a spark to ignite the fuel inside the burner and begin the combustion process. The flame is then monitored by the Flame Sensing Electrode which makes sure that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present within the combustion chamber. This important safety feature prevents gas from flooding the burner if the flame goes out.
