A thermocouple is a safety device that stops unburnt gas from building up within the appliance when there is no flame detected. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end senses heat the valve receives a small current, notifying it to remain open. When no signal is sent, the valve remains closed.
