A thermocouple is a safety device that stops unburnt gas from building up within the appliance when the pilot light is out. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end encounters a flame the valve receives a small current, instructing it to stay open. When no signal is sent, the valve stays closed.
