There are 2 main types of electrodes that are found in most boilers: The Ignition Electrode (sometimes known as the Spark Electrode) and the Flame sensing Electrode. A Spark Electrode uses an electronically generated spark to ignite the fuel inside the burner and begin the combustion process. A Flame Sensing Electrode, on the other hand, checks that a flame is present within the combustion chamber. This important safety feature prevents gas from flooding the burner if the flame goes out.
