A thermocouple is a safety device that prevents unburnt gas from building up within the appliance when there is no flame detected. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the other is attached to a volt sensor that controls the gas valve. When the pilot end senses heat a small current flows to the valve, notifying it to stay open. When no signal is sent, the valve remains closed.
