A thermocouple is a safety instrument that restricts unburnt gas from building up within the appliance when the pilot light is out. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the other is attached to a volt sensor that controls the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame a small current flows to the valve, notifying it to stay open. When there is no signal, the valve stays closed.
