A thermocouple is a safety instrument that prevents unburnt gas from flooding the appliance when there is no flame detected. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the other is attached to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end senses heat a small current is sent to the valve, instructing it to stay open. When no signal is sent, the valve remains closed.
