A thermocouple is a safety device that prevents unburnt gas from building up within the appliance when there is no flame detected. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the other is attached to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame a small current is sent to the valve, notifying it to remain open. When there is no signal, the valve remains closed.
