A thermocouple is a safety instrument that restricts unburnt gas from building up within the boiler when there is no flame detected. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that controls the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame the valve receives a small current, notifying it to remain open. When no signal is sent, the valve remains closed.
