A thermocouple is a safety device that stops unburnt gas from flooding the boiler when there is no flame detected. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that governs the gas valve. When the pilot end senses heat a small current is sent to the valve, instructing it to remain open. When no signal is sent, the valve remains closed.
