Honeywell Q309A2721 Thermocouple

A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that restricts unburnt gas from flooding the boiler when there is no flame detected. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end senses heat the valve receives a small current, notifying it to stay open. When no signal is sent, the valve stays closed.
