A thermocouple is a safety device that prevents unburnt gas from flooding the boiler when there is no flame detected. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame a small current flows to the valve, notifying it to remain open. When no signal is sent, the valve remains closed.
