There are 2 main types of electrodes that are found in most boilers: The Flame Sensing Electrode and the Spark Electrode. The Spark Electrode utilises an electronically generated spark to ignite the gases within the combustion chamber. A Flame Sensing Electrode, on the other hand, checks that a flame is present inside the burner. This important safety feature stop gas from being supplied if the flame goes out.
