In most boilers, there are two types of Electrodes : 1) The Spark Electrode and 2) the Flame Sensing Electrode. A Spark Electrode uses an electronically generated spark to ignite the fuel inside the burner and begin the combustion process. The Flame Sensing Electrode ensures that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present inside the burner. This important safety feature prevents gas from flooding the burner if the flame goes out.
