In most boilers, there are two types of Electrodes : 1) The Spark Electrode and 2) the Flame Sensing Electrode. A Spark Electrode uses an electronically generated spark to ignite the gases within the combustion chamber. The Flame Sensing Electrode makes sure that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present inside the burner. This important safety feature prevents gas from flooding the burner if the flame goes out.
