A thermocouple is a safety device that restricts unburnt gas from building up within the boiler when the pilot light is out. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that controls the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame a small current is sent to the valve, notifying it to remain open. When no signal is sent, the valve stays closed.
