A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that prevents unburnt gas from building up within the appliance when there is no flame detected. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame a small current is sent to the valve, notifying it to stay open. When no signal is sent, the valve stays closed.
