Vaillant 171181 Thermocouple

A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that restricts unburnt gas from building up within the boiler when there is no flame detected. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the other is attached to a volt sensor that governs the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame a small current flows to the valve, instructing it to stay open. When no signal is sent, the valve remains closed.
