A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that restricts unburnt gas from flooding the appliance when there is no flame detected. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that controls the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame a small current flows to the valve, instructing it to remain open. When there is no signal, the valve stays closed.
