Expansion vessels generally consist of two compartments, split by a rubber sheet known as diaphragm. In a pressurised system of air and water, shifts in temperature can increase and decrease the pressure. The expansion vessel allows the system additional space to use when the water expands, this minimises the risk of dangerous pressure levels within the central heating system.
