A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that stops unburnt gas from flooding the boiler when the pilot light is out. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that controls the gas valve. When the pilot end encounters a flame a small current flows to the valve, instructing it to remain open. When no signal is sent, the valve stays closed.
