A thermocouple is a safety device that stops unburnt gas from building up within the boiler when there is no flame detected. One end is positioned within or just above the pilot flame, the other is attached to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame the valve receives a small current, notifying it to remain open. When no signal is sent, the valve stays closed.
