A thermocouple is a safety instrument that restricts unburnt gas from flooding the boiler when there is no flame detected. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that controls the gas valve. When the pilot end senses heat a small current is sent to the valve, notifying it to stay open. When there is no signal, the valve remains closed.
