A thermocouple is a safety mechanism that prevents unburnt gas from flooding the appliance when there is no flame detected. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the opposite end is fitted to a volt sensor that controls the gas valve. When the pilot end encounters a flame the valve receives a small current, instructing it to stay open. When there is no signal, the valve remains closed.
