A thermocouple is a safety instrument that stops unburnt gas from flooding the boiler when the pilot light is out. One end if fitted within or just above the pilot flame, the other is attached to a volt sensor that operates the gas valve. When the pilot end detects a flame the valve receives a small current, notifying it to stay open. When no signal is sent, the valve stays closed.
