In most boilers, there are two types of Electrodes : The Flame Sensing Electrode and the Spark Electrode. When there is a need to activate the boiler, the PCB relays commands to the Spark Electrode which then utilises a spark to ignite the fuel inside the burner and begin the combustion process. The Flame Sensing Electrode checks that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present inside the burner. This feature is critical as it prevents gas from flooding the burner if the flame has been extinguished.
