The Heat Exchanger passes heat from the combustion chamber to the water within a system. Depending on the type of appliance in question, there are two different types of heat exchanger: A primary heat exchanger and a secondary heat exchanger (also known as a domestic hot water heat exchanger or a plate heat exchanger). Most boilers are equipped with a primary heat exchanger which allows water within the system to be heated. The secondary heat exchanger, however, is only present in combi boilers and enacts the transfer of heat between two independent closed systems.
