In most boilers, there are two types of Electrodes : The Flame Monitoring Electrode (also known as the Flame Sensing Electrode) and the Spark Electrode (also known as the Ignition Electrode). A Spark Electrode utilises a spark to ignite the gases within the combustion chamber. The flame is then monitored by the Flame Sensing Electrode which checks that the flame started by the spark electrode is still present within the combustion chamber. This important safety feature prevents gas from flooding the burner if the flame has been extinguished.
